Newbie question - spending less unproductive time with RescueTime

Hi there,

I’m very new to this so please forgive this question which I’m sure has a simple answer, I just can’t see it!

I want to limit unproductive time spent on my mobile, using rescuetime to track. When I go to set a goal I choose rescuetime and choose unproductive time, but I don’t know what figure to put for the weekly rate? I’ve tried a positive and a negative figure but both result in a goal to ‘increase unproductive time’! Any suggestions for what I should be doing here would be appreciated.

While I’m here, I also wanted to check something related - I also want to track unproductive time spent on my work computer, will I need to set up a separate goal for this as I’m assuming it will have a different Rescue Time key?

Hi Katy!

Our rescuetime goal setup is supposed to figure out whether to make
your goal a “do more” or a “do less” based on the classification of
the activity you’re choosing to track (e.g. very productive => do
more), but sometimes if you don’t have very much data collected about
it yet, rescuetime might not know how to classify it, and then we
default to a “do more” goal, which is probably not really the right
thing to do. Also we’ve had this question crop up a couple times
lately, which has me suspicious that there might be something even
buggier going on here – I mean, especially if you’re explicitly
picking “unproductive time”. Anyhow, if you can just start the goal
and email support for help we can adjust the settings behind the
scenes.

If you are using the same rescuetime user account on your work
computer the one key will work for both goals – but you still have to
paste it to beeminder when you create the goal.
