Beeminding book reading

Sounds like that works well.

I wish that the Kindle Freetime tracking system had a version for adults (I’ve thought about making a kid profile for myself just to get info on how much I’m reading, but that feels weird), and that it could be integrated with Beeminder. I’d definitely do a lot more reading if I had a goal for it, but so far the idea of manually tracking my reading sounds way too tedious. Since most of my reading is on my Kindle, it seems like the Freetime system would be a perfect fit, but because it’s so kid-focused and bound up with all those library restriction features, I’ve been hesitant to activate it on my Kindle.

I use Beeminder and Rescuetime integration. So far it is useful for reading 1.5hrs daily beeminding the kindle time use. That works, but only on Mac/Pc. It will be nice to have the RescueTime on iPhone (yeah I know Apple sandboxing) but for now and a couple of months later it has been pretty useful to build the habit.

Got my new Kindle today and setup FreeTime for myself. It was weird when i answered that i’m a ā€œboyā€ and couldn’t put my birth year below 1980, but whatever…
So far i like that it seems to do a good job at tracking actual reading time, e.g. time spent on menus, etc is not counted, and you get a countdown at the footer (ā€œ14min left for your daily goalā€)

For anyone interested, more details on what numbers it gives you, see here http://www.dshack.net/2014/11/04/tracking-reading-statistics-on-the-kindle/

Haha, that’s my Quora answer! Yep, Freetime looked promising but 1) it doesn’t work for personal documents or books purchased outside the Kindle store, and 2) there’s no API :frowning:

Yeah, for now i just have a daily habit on Habitica for ā€œ15’ readingā€. When Kindle says i’ve reached it, i just check the daily on Habitica.
A minimal amount of data entry, and at this point i’d rather enforce a daily process rather than a general amount of activity

I’ve decided to discontinue my Beeminder goal. As people have said, the ā€œX minutes left in your reading goalā€ notification on the Kindle is pretty motivating, and it was getting aggravating to dig out the Kindle every few days to update my Beeminder goal. If it was automated, I’d probably keep it, but as it is, it’s just not providing significant reinforcement one way or the other. I have ā€œreadā€ in my daily Complice boilerplate and a ā€œreadā€ habit in Habitica. Beeminding it just seems like overkill. So I’ve marked the goal for archiving.

Now I just have to figure out what I want to replace it with! A workout goal? Another money goal (I’ve already got two)? Hm. Gotta think about this.

Hi, thanks for your feedback but could you clarify on how I can beemind specific activities? I’m new to both RescueTime and Beeminder, and would like to record my reading hours. I’m now using RescueTime on my laptop to track my usage on a website, and am thinking to download the RT app on my iPad to track reading time from the app Books.
