Hi! My name is Olivia. I have a goal to build up my new freelance writing business to have a solid roster of clients so I can support myself and my freelance journalism endeavors. Living off savings for the past year, I’ve made so many excuses to put off prioritizing this work which has repeatedly led to anguish, stress, low self-confidence and disappointment in myself. Not anymore! I am going to invest in myself and my future by setting my goal of 6 hours of Focusmate sessions per weekday, working on my business which will include deep work writing sessions, self-marketing tasks, and admin/organizational tasks.

Hello! My name is Shannon, and (according to my Screen Time), I’ve spent 5 hours on the Beeminder forums and blog in the past 3 days.

Safe to say, my time management and prioritisation skills are absolutely top notch.

I gave this whole Beeminding thing a chance a few years ago, but that was at a time in my life when the threat of $5 was both too much for me to lose, and not enough of a stick to get me to brush my teeth once a day.

Things are much better now. Before I settled down to spend even more of my evenings on the forums, I was walking up and down my living room to get those pesky Beeminder-tracked steps in.

In all seriousness, I’m both employed now (yay, money that I can afford to lose), and I have enrolled at University this year. I actually have the shell of a routine built, and Beeminder is finally the right fit for my life.

I’ve been a bit naughty in paying to get unlimited goals… but my justification to myself is that I’m already a Hashtag Quantified Self-er, so the only difference now will be the fact the data is getting wired up to my bank account via Beeminder.

I certainly won’t be the first ADHD’er to say “oh yeah, I’m gonna Beemind all the things!!” before disappearing off into the nether… but I’m… hopeful that I keep the good things happening!

Wonderful! Welcome back! I’m amused that your idea of naughtiness is splurging on unlimited goals. We’re actually gradually working on making that unnecessary. Hey there 👋 Kyle here. ADHDer and Product Manager for the local public media station here in Seattle, and an MBA student as well! I first tried Beeminder like…a decade ago?? Like lots of others I have spent lots of time looking for the right solutions to my every wandering brain and difficulty building habits. I was somewhat successful with the platform a few times since I first tried it, but it never stuck for a variety of reasons.

Moving forward to the present(ish) I started Beeminding my first goal in mid-December of last year and for whatever reason was able to stick with it this time. I added one other goal shortly after and am on a 3+ moth streak with both of those. There are a variety of factors that I think have led to me sticking with the platform longer-term this go around - but I’m also scared to question it too much for fear of it all falling apart 😅 Though I am not very worried about that at the moment 😄

I now have about 10 goals I keep up with regularly and am constantly tweaking and adjusting what that mix looks like. Overall, this year I have been the most successful with my goals as I have ever been - and Beeminder has played a big part in that! And now that I feel fairly solid in my use of the platform I thought now would be a good time to do an introduction and start posting a bit more frequently. I have been really enjoying reading about all the cool things people have been doing with the platform on the forum 😃

You can get a fairly good idea of what I have been working on lately on [my goals page](https://www.beeminder.com/kyle). Outside of work and school I have been learning Piano via [Piano Marvel](https://pianomarvel.com/), going through the [freeCodeCamp](https://www.freecodecamp.org/) curriculum (into JavaScript now!), working my way through an in depth online cooking course from [Rouxbe](https://rouxbe.com/site/professional-courses/), and am on track to read [52 books this year from all different genres](https://app.thestorygraph.com/profile/kylepace)! I also have a personal website [kylepace.net](https://www.kylepace.net/) that I’m working on - it’s pretty barebones right now but planning to beemind some regular blog posts on it soon and add some case studies.

Glad to be here and looking forward to connecting with others in the community! ✌

Hi, I’m Vivian, aka Halflight89. Originally I checked beeminder a while ago. But I didn’t have a creditcard back then, and I found it too much of a hassle to manually track my iOS screentime.

However, my AUDHD makes it hard to stick to all the good intentions I have, and after some trial and error with other similar platforms, I decided that I like the graphs and ability to visualize how much more / less I should do in a day better.

I’m still trying to figure out what goals work best for me. So there’s still some goals that won’t last for a week. But my intention is to have max 5 goals for now, that help me take care of my self.

Keepers for now are:

- toothbrushing (I never got to more than once a day until the goal)
- Choir practicing (I got anxious every rehearsal that I didn’t practice enough, and there is a big show coming soon)
- weightloss (My BMI is-no-was over 25 and my sugar intake was far too high)

Still figuring out if it works:

- screentime, I want to spend less time browsing. Currently configured as the sum of browsing on my phone and tablet. Helps me to not go from one device to the next, but if I have spare room on the other device it’s tempting.

- scrolls, I want to slowly un-learn browsing on my phone in general. Currently configured as triangular, but I might replace it with a normal goal, or reduce the screentime goal with the amount of time I used for occasional phone browsing. Or change it to browsing at night.

- beeminder posts - nothing very hard to keep up with, just a small nudge to not completely forget to drop by here if I need advice or have a question.

Considering:

- grocery shopping. I want to visit the store frequently enough to always have a spare meal for the next day. But there’s too many goals for me then, so I’m fine tuning the others first.

My strategy is currently small stakes, small goals by the way. Enough to motivate me to keep going, without pushing myself to overachieve.

Hi! I’m Keegs! I got started with this kind of thing on Stickk, using it to work on math problems 3x/week for year. Currently have an aggressive weight loss goal on there as well that’s working swimmingly. Heard about Beeminder a month or so ago and I’ve been hooked.

I’m a language nerd and currently in the process of converting to Judaism, so I’ve got some Hebrew-related goals, and I’ll probably add more Jewish-themed ones as I go (a little Mishnah every day? “Do something at the synagogue” once a month? Something like that). I’m also a software engineer and serious-book reader. Currently trying to use Boss as a Service to compel me to pretend to be in a Kant seminar.

Smattering of [current goals](https://www.beeminder.com/koneida):

- hsentences: Read over “language island” sentences in Hebrew for some minutes per day, testing myself on meaning, adding mnemonic flashcards if I miss them.
- hebac: Practice a small amount of English to Hebrew sentences every day. Same sentences list as above, just in reverse.
- withdraw: I think this is clever. It’s a tax on withdrawing from savings. I tick it up once per day if _yesterday_ I did _not_ transfer money out of savings. If I miss even one day, I derail, so it functions as a gradual tax on savings usage.
- anki: do some anki once a day!
- deepwork: do at least one short deep work session every workday!
- sightwords: practice a stack of sight words with my daughter at least once a week
- worksummary: every couple weeks I have to give a presentation on work I’ve done, and I often forget the details. This goal is to write a brief summary once per work day of what I did that day.

</div>

Hey, I’m Tom (gallery [here](https://www.beeminder.com/folkjam)). I found about Beeminder from somewhere in the broader rationalist blogosphere (maybe [Neel Nanda?](https://www.neelnanda.io/blog/mini-blog-post-24-on-procrastination-the-art-of-shaping-your-future-actions)) and I’ve finally taken the plunge and started a couple goals. TBH I got sold on this mostly by the many excellent and detailed posts on the blog, lots of great stuff on there.

- **Goals** : (I only have 3 at the moment so I guess I don’t need to pick favourites)
  - `blogpost`: Posting to my [blog](https://furretnz.bearblog.dev/) at least once a week. Not quite ready to take Scott Alexander’s advice and post daily, but maybe someday!
  - `digitalcleanup`: Unsubscribing from/deleting stuff. I’ve already cut down my active internet usage quite a lot over the last several years, but there’s still a lot of cruft in my inbox and my PC that I want to clean up.
  - `wordcount`: Using the [Obsidian Plugin](https://forum.beeminder.com/t/obsidian-plugin-for-beeminder/11748) to track words written in Obsidian (though the plugin only seems to work with one file at a time at the moment, and I’d rather have it track the entire vault). This is a catch-all for a bunch of writing stuff I want to do: note taking, journaling, blog post ideas, maybe even longer form fiction writing? I’m drafting this very post in Obsidian right now even.

The slopes for these are pretty shallow at the moment but I’ll probably try dialling/ratcheting it up once I get into a routine.

- **Potential Goals** :
  - Obviously ‘write more’ is a big overarching aim for me. I’m still mostly writing into the void right now, but maybe I could find places to discuss things I’m interested in. Problem is quality online communities are hard to find (though this place seems nice!) and I feel like I need a good ‘reason’ to post which ends up being quite a big barrier.
  - Reading isn’t really something I need to dig up motivation for (I’ve already archive binged the Beeminder blog archive lol), but goals for finding new sources or diving into an unfamiliar topic would be good.
  - Languages: Apart from English I know moderate Japanese and basic Mandarin. Maybe I need to dig up the old Anki decks again? Also I massively neglected speaking practice so motivation there would be good.
  - Mundane day to day life stuff: Exercising, getting out of the house, finding events to go to etc.
  - Work stuff: Professional development stuff, coding/DevOpsing outside of work, something something AI

Hello, I’m Ruby, and I’m not new to beeminder (have been using it [daily for over a year now](https://www.beeminder.com/rubygagotoku/gallery)!) but I’d like to get over my shyness and become active on the forum, so I thought I’d say hello!

Over the last year I’ve used Beeminder for everything from [getting through difficult books](https://www.beeminder.com/rubygagotoku/mdzs), selling my old stuff on ebay, putting in enough study hours to [pass the highest level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Tes](https://www.beeminder.com/rubygagotoku/jlpt)t, eating through [16 boxes of cereal](https://www.beeminder.com/rubygagotoku/cereal) that I bought by mistake, and [reading over 80 novels in Japanese](https://www.beeminder.com/rubygagotoku/books25)! Beeminder has changed my life and I am so grateful for that.

I also wrote a [blogpost](https://rubygagotoku.substack.com/p/how-to-get-things-done-with-beeminder) recently about what beeminder means to me, I’m sure none of it will be news to anyone on this forum, but sharing it here just in case.

My favourite goal is probably the aforementioned [books](https://www.beeminder.com/rubygagotoku/books25) goal. I love the chaos of it, and how I can see the rhythm of my year in reading. I will be retiring this one soon and starting a fresh one for 2026, and am looking forward to seeing how crazy that one gets.

I’m also wanting to commit to starting studying Latin regularly in 2026 so am currently brainstorming the best way to turn that into goals.

Thank you for having me!

Woohoo Latin! Welcome to the forum. Impressed by your language-learning diligence. I’m a language nerd myself, but Latin is my only real win out of a grab-bag of languages I’ve tried over the years.

Ruby! Welcome (to the forum in particular; I know you’re a Beeminder veteran).

Your blog post is so good. Couple of my favorite bits:

> As a feckless layabout with a tendency to follow the path of least resistance, this has been enormous.

> Why not an accountability buddy? Unfortunately, my friends are too kind to me, and I knew they would probably listen and nod sagely to my whiny excuses as to why I couldn’t pick up MDZS that particular night… until they would gradually stop checking. I needed a cold hard measurestick that didn’t care about me.
>
> That’s when I found Beeminder. And over the next arduous month, I turned up dutifully whenever the graph turned red. I read my pages. I finished the book. It’s safe to say, since then, Beeminder has become one of my most valuable allies.

As for Latin, I’ve been learning Latin phrases with an Anki deck I found. I’m not sure if I want to actually learn the grammar. Want to start a forum thread for Latin learning?

Hi, I’m cocoapunch. I’m a gamedev and app developer living in Europe, trying to wrestle down the executive dysfunction beast by getting my wallet involved, since hard deadlines and negative outcomes are the only thing that keep me in line.

Trying it out with some housework I keep putting off, walking to work instead of driving, and clearing out some backlog tasks that are haunting me.

Nice to meet you all, good luck with your goals! 🤘

Hello everyone! I’m Jewell **(she/her)** and am brand new to Beeminder. Just set my first goal yesterday.

I’ve tried so many different systems for productivity, this is one of the few actual tools I’ve used. But I’ve come up with a bunch of different reward systems, spent more time planning the system than it felt like I actually spent doing the things before the system broke, and I’m desperate to get my life on the right track!!

It’s kind of an odd choice I feel almost because I’ve actually lost a LOT of money over the course of my life by not taking care of things when they were meant to be taken care of. But typically those are things that I forgot about around the deadline and this is a system to help me not forget.

Right now I only have one goal of cleaning for 10 minutes a day but eventually I’d like to Beemind: working out, meal prepping, oil changes, practicing bass, writing music, making plans to be social, studying, yeah I can think of a million things and they all feel necessary to Beemind because consistency is such a huge struggle for me.

I’m excited to see what I can learn about myself and for new heights that I can reach.

Hello! I’m kind of the opposite of a newbee: I believe I opened my beeminder account in 2012. But I’ve never posted on the forum before, and although I always really liked the concept of beeminder and have had a few slightly abortive bouts of tracking stuff with it over the last 14 years (!), I would say I didn’t really start getting earnest use out of it until sometime around a year ago. Better late than never to figure my shit out or to say hello, right?

At the moment I’m beeminding:

- **chores** — this has been running since July 2025 and has been very successful. It requires me to complete any 2 tasks from my “Chores and house maintenance” project on Todoist per day. Most of these, obviously, are recurring tasks. Some of them are much lower-hanging fruit than others and I very frequently push the ones I don’t want to do further into the future, but I get to them eventually and on the whole I keep my environment significantly nicer, most of the time, than before I was beeminding this. I’ve had a few derails, but none recently. I’ve never changed the slope (other than scheduling breaks to go on holiday), but I’ve recently changed the way I organise my chore todos a little bit and I think I might actually want to make it a little steeper as a result.

- **declutter** — not a subset of chores, but a separate project to get rid of Unneeded Stuff from one area of my house every so often (I have the rate set to 0.04 per day). I am kind of weaselly about this goal; I frequently let it get very close to derailing and then pick something close to unreasonably easy as my “area”, such as a single drawer. However, this is still a lot more decluttering than I’d probably get done if I gave up on this goal, so I let myself get away with it! I’m not _very_ clutterbuggy by nature, but my house is small and stuff does gradually accumulate if I don’t fight against it. This goal has been running since January this year and I recently made the slope shallower because I was feeling like I might run out of areas that could beneficially be decluttered, so it’s been doing its job alright enough.

- **todoistzero** — in some ways a misnomer, because I don’t require myself to complete all my Todoist tasks (or even all the Todoist tasks I had scheduled for the day) in order to get a datapoint for this. I just require myself to clear out the “Today” list by _some_ means, which nearly always involves postponing or skipping the recurrence of at least a couple of tasks. The benefit is that I actually review my tasks and consider when I might do them, I’m very aware of the things I keep putting off (which is step one towards not doing that!), and I don’t accumulate way overdue tasks, throw up my hands and give up on using Todoist altogether. I operationalise this by having a Todoist project called “Zero tracker” containing a single task that recurs every day. I tick it off iff / as soon as it’s the only task remaining in my “Today” list. So there’s one datapoint available per day, and the goal asks 0.9 of me, so I can accumulate some buffer and slip up now and then. The goal has been running since January this year; I’ve had a few derails, including a little spate of them sometime in the summer, but I’ve been doing very well on it lately.

- **bedtime** — go to bed by 22:30, at least 80% of the time. I’m having mixed success on this one. I derailed on it just a couple of days ago, not for the first time since August when I set it up; but the bigger problem is that it’s only _correlated_ with my actual goal of keeping a regular sleep schedule with ideal sleeping hours of, like 22:30 to 06:30. It definitely is correlated, so I don’t find it useless; but nothing about this goal stops me from getting into bed at 22:29 sharp and then scrolling rubbish on my phone until 1am. Sleep is a real issue for me and a bit complicated. I would probably like to add another goal to complement this one; maybe one to do with waking up (or rather, getting up) in the morning, and/or one about my lights out / screens off time. The latter is more dispositive, really, but I’m not completely sure how to frame a goal in a way that doesn’t penalise me for reading my ereader or turning on a podcast when I genuinely can’t sleep or wake up from nightmares.

- **exercise** — do some kind of exercise (operationalised as ticking off a task in my loftily-named “Training” Todoist project, whose name used to be a lot more apt in my more athletic days) at a rate of 0.6 per day. This is the goal I’m least happy with. It seems to be encouraging me to go for a lot of 20-minute walks… which is certainly better than doing _nothing_, but allowing a series of 20-minute walks to buy me quite frequent permission to skip exercising at all is really not what I’m looking for here. I started this goal in April; it’s derailed a few times, but (far worse) I’m not sure it has actually increased the amount of meaningful exercise I’m doing. I want to revamp this, maybe with reference to my Garmin activities somehow? I also think I might like to separate out “go outside and move around at least a bit in the fresh air” and “do ‘proper’ exercise that actually improves your strength and/or conditioning” and beemind them both. Some of my activities tick both these boxes, but there are many that only tick one.

- **eatwell** — brand new and a bit experimental, so I don’t know how well this is going to work. The idea is: I’ve set up a Todoist project called “Food diary” and I will get datapoints by ticking off tasks in it. There are four daily recurring tasks available: “Morning eating”, which I can tick off if I eat a breakfast that doesn’t include sweet foods and then don’t snack until lunchtime; “Afternoon eating”, which is the same thing for lunch until dinnertime; “Evening eating”, which is the same thing for dinner until bedtime; and “Log food”, which I can tick off if I note down what I’ve eaten for the day. I’ve set the goal to ask me for 3 datapoints per day, with the theoretical aim of doing the logging every day and sticking to all three eating pattern tasks every weekday. If I can keep to that ideal, I’ll gradually earn a bit of buffer. It’s possible that this is too much of a mishmash of tasks, but I quite like the notion of being able to earn a datapoint even on a really bad day just by facing up to how bad it was. I’m not too worried about weaselling around what is and isn’t a “sweet food” or an instance of snacking: I know it when I see it, your honour. I’ll see how this one goes.

I welcome thoughts on my goals!
