In a similar vein, I have a Beeminder goal for doing the cat box three
times per week. That works decently, but I can build up enough margin by
doing it every other day that I can go four or even five if I’m feeling
lazy, which is all the time. It’s not healthy for my cat or nose.

I wouldn’t mind a different sort of goal that’s deliberately inflexible,
having Beeminder’s teeth behind a “cat box every other day without fail”
sort of goal.

I’d like to set a daily goal of writing 750 words a day so I set the daily
rate to be 750.

When I entered my writing for today (800), it gives me 3 days until
derailment. Even with retroratchet, it cuts it down to 2 days until
derailment.

Is it possible to make it so that there’s only 1 day until derailment so
that I’m required to enter 750 everyday?

thanks!

This.
I’ve missed being able to force myself to do something every day. I would
really like to have that again.

Sometimes when I’m trying to just create a habit, I’ll require very little
of myself at first, but I’ll want to be able to require that of myself
every day. If I do better than usual on a given day, though, I end up stuck
with several days of safety and can’t get it down to below 2 days with
retroratcheting or with safe days. I, too, would really like to have that
option back.

It’s a little hackish, but you can enter a negative datapoint to cut down
your safety buffer to whatever you want, and then go from there. I’ve used
that trick a few times in the past, especially for these sorts of “do
something once a day” goals.

Yes, I have the Bee Lite plan, but I’ve never adjusted the width of my
roads. I think in order to do that you can convert your goal to a Custom
goal type. However, I don’t think adjusting the width would help you in
any case. Retroratcheting would still leave you with 2 days of buffer. (I
think — I’m actually not really sure how the road width adjustment works.)

By the way, if your goal is to write every day, instead of making a road
with a daily rate of 750, I suggest making one with a daily rate of 1, and
enter a data point of ‘1’ every time you write more than 750 words. A road
with a rate of 750 means you want to write 750 words per day _on average_,
which is very different from the way [750words.com](http://750words.com) works.

One more thought: the Bee Lite plan also gives you the ability to specify
how much buffer you are left with after retroratcheting. The default is 2
but you can enter other values. If you’re willing to get the Bee Lite plan
this sounds perfect for your use case.

I have “Plan Bee” and, although you can specify the buffer left when
retroratcheting, if you enter less than 2, it still won’t actually do less
than 2. Same for safe days. (This is true on ‘Do More’ goals only; the ‘Do
Less’ goals can be retroratcheted down to 0. I think they plan to fix that,
but I definitely don’t want to be speaking for them!) Upgrading the account
will not, in fact, change that.
(Though, I think upgrading the account is still worth it for the custom
goals.)

Oh, right, I forgot about this bug. =( Anyway, entering a negative data
point still works, other than the fact that entering fake data feels icky.

When I have a situation like this (goal is less frequent than once a day,
and I don’t want to wait much longer than the road dial average between
times I do it), if I do end up doing a goal much earlier than the deadline,
I like to retroratchet just before entering the new datapoint. That way I
never have to do the goal more frequently than is defined in the road dial,
and I still can’t build up a margin to go significantly longer than the
average amount of time needed between data points.

I had it set up that way at first but wanted to be able to see how many
words I was writing each day and eventually change my goal to 800/day
900/day 1000/day etc. Sounds like there’s no way to do that currently
though right?

Wait, that will be super sad if you have to switch to lower-fidelity
metric just to work around our insufficiently harsh retroratcheting!
Maybe stand by while we see if we can fix that this weekend?

Ugh, I have this problem and keep poking the beeminder people to fix it 😕
I want to enforce a minimum walk at least 7000 steps a day goal.

(I do have an upgraded beeminder account)
Hey Beeminder people! I love you….but I’d love you more if you changed this for me 😉

In a similar vein, I have a Beeminder goal for doing the cat box three times per week. That works decently, but I can build up enough margin by doing it every other day that I can go four or even five if I’m feeling lazy, which is all the time. It’s not healthy for my cat or nose.

I wouldn’t mind a different sort of goal that’s deliberately inflexible, having Beeminder’s teeth behind a “cat box every other day without fail” sort of goal.

I have “Plan Bee” and, although you can specify the buffer left when retroratcheting, if you enter less than 2, it still won’t actually do less than 2. Same for safe days. (This is true on ‘Do More’ goals only; the ‘Do Less’ goals can be retroratcheted down to 0. I think they plan to fix that, but I definitely don’t want to be speaking for them!) Upgrading the account will not, in fact, change that.
(Though, I think upgrading the account is still worth it for the custom goals.)

One more thought: the Bee Lite plan also gives you the ability to specify how much buffer you are left with after retroratcheting. The default is 2 but you can enter other values. If you’re willing to get the Bee Lite plan this sounds perfect for your use case.

When I entered my writing for today (800), it gives me 3 days until derailment. Even with retroratchet, it cuts it down to 2 days until derailment.

Is it possible to make it so that there’s only 1 day until derailment so that I’m required to enter 750 everyday?
