A very noob question : but what is the difference between rates 1 per day
and 7 per week ?

Also , which rate is better in which scenario?

I am beeminding the number of pomodoros completed with a rate of 42/week?
Would it be better in this case to switch to 6/day?

I think this depends on the activity you are beeminding and on its weekly
schedule.

If it is performed daily, and you can quantify it on a daily basis, go for
a daily rate.
As an example: I have started to use anki, and I’m beeminding both new
cards[https://www.beeminder.com/afcuttin/goals/anki02](https://www.beeminder.com/afcuttin/goals/anki02)and cards under
review. I know that I want to learn 25 new cards every
day(this can be set up in the app and I have control on this), in the
weekend also, so in this case I opted for a daily rate.

On the other side, I’m beeminding my hours of study. Since I know that in
the weekend I may not study (provided I have enough
safety[https://beeminder.uservoice.com/forums/3011-general/suggestions/2489098-allow-scheduling-of-days-off-in-advance](https://beeminder.uservoice.com/forums/3011-general/suggestions/2489098-allow-scheduling-of-days-off-in-advance)
buffer [http://blog.beeminder.com/chunky/](http://blog.beeminder.com/chunky/)), I opted for a weekly rate.

Hope this helps!

But what about derailment? Is there any difference?

A 7/week rate would derail if I don’t enter anything on my first day as
would be the case for 1/day rate.

For hours of study , I could set the weekly rate W hrs to daily rate W/5
hours per day ( to buffer for weekends)

The derailment occurs if you don’t provide enough data points, in both
cases.
It depends also on the width of your yellow brick road (on which you have
no control).

I suggest you to set up a goal to try it out. Please keep in mind that you
can opt for a test goal: it self-deletes in a week if you don’t opt out
(you get a reminder for this, too)

Bye,
Alessandro

Wait, we don’t have control over the YBR? I thought for noisy goals
Beeminder assures us that if you’re on the good side of the YBR today,
you’ll never be off the YBR tomorrow. So to get an extra-wide YBR you
just make sure you’re perfect much perfect, and then have the biggest,
most giant thanksgiving feast ever, and then weigh yourself
immediately after midnight having drunk 2 litres of eggnog and singing
“Call Me Maybe”…

Or have I been gaming it wrong?

Beeminder considers everything at day granularity, so the weekly vs
daily etc rate units are just a convenience. If it is something that
you think of in terms of how often you do it per day (e.g. servings of
vegetables) rather than how often per week (e.g. number of times you
eat out), you can switch the rate units and let us do the
multiplication for you.

Bethany

(and that is totally true of noisy roads, paul, but for non-noisy
roads, it is based on the rate of the road, which you do have control
over so _technically_…)

This conversation has reminded me: switching between rate units is
quite clumsy with the current interface.

Perhaps:

1. Unit selection at goal creation screen
2. Shorthand syntax to change rate from “Dial” box. e.g. If I enter
“20” it keeps current behavior, but if I enter “20/week” it switches
to weekly and sets amount to 20
