really like your term “programmable self” (in contrast to quantified self).

“Egonomics” is quite amusing. I hadn’t heard that one before.

Thomas Schelling coined that one (egonomics)!

And, Jake, it was Fred Trotter of [runorelse.com](http://runorelse.com) who coined “programmable self”.

I think “picoeconomics” is a pretty clever coinage too. That’s George Ainslie.

Other terms to add to the list:

- hyperbolic discounting
- time inconsistency
- dynamic inconsistency
- preference reversals
- tying oneself to the mast
- aherking off?
- multiple selves
- delayed/deferred gratification
- captology
- willpower
- (new years) resolutions

(There’s a psych term that I learned recently that it’s driving me
nuts that I can’t find again.)

I thought “picoeconomics” was going a little too far. I prefer to call my own research “nanoeconomics.” 🙂 But maybe that’s apt, as I’m trying to study people’s transaction behavior rather than what’s actually going on in their brains.

Are you looking for “present-biased preferences”?

Ha, I forgot that you use the term “nanoeconomics”.
“Present-biased preferences” is a good addition, but not the one on
the tip of my tongue.
This one is not used in the econ literature…

Finally found it!
“counteractive self-control”
Turns out I was remembering it from the Q&A at the end of a talk by
economist David Laibson – [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heO2RXvU8U4](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=heO2RXvU8U4)
– hence my frustrating inability to find it by grepping my browser
history.

Hi Daniel,

two features I’d like to see:

a) semi-private goals, which means readable to everybody who has the
secret link.

b) possibility to “lock my gains”. What I mean is: Say I want to cut
my smoking and allow myself 14 cigarettes a week. Now if I manage to
avoid smoking for a week I have a credit of 14 cigarettes. Now I might
want to keep that buffer because I want to smoke a lot next month or I
might want to bar myself from myself from that option.

Alex

thanks alex, this is great feedback!
there are actually items on the feedback forum related to both of
these if you want to upvote or add comments:
[RetroRatchet! – Customer Feedback for Beeminder](http://beeminder.uservoice.com/forums/3011-general/suggestions/2289727-retroratchet-)
[Allow semiprivate goals – Customer Feedback for Beeminder](http://beeminder.uservoice.com/forums/3011-general/suggestions/2371210-allow-semiprivate-goals)

(oh, i see you sent this to the akratics list – [support@beeminder.com](mailto:support@beeminder.com)
is probably better though of course I’m always happy to see
discussions about beeminder features on the akratics list!)
