Contradicting claims in the documentation

The page describing the difference between the goal-types say this (among other things)

NB: Do More and Weight goals are available for all members, while Infinibee subscribers gain access to Odometer and Whittle Down goals as well. Only Bee Plus and Beemium subscribers have access to custom goals

But this conflicts with the overview page for subscriptions which clearly lists “Unlimited goal types” as one of the features of Infinibee.

This is confusing two different ways: First it’s strange to call it “unlimited” goal-types if it’s intended to exclude “custom” goals.

But secondly, it’s also confusing what’s up with “Do Less” type goals – according to the quote I include here Infinibee folks do not get to use “Do less” type goals, but is that actually true?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the terminology here! I didn’t write the “unlimited goal types” copy, but my guess is that the intent was to refer to the named goal types that have a particular setup. “Custom” goals aren’t any one thing, they don’t have any consistent settings and you could have a custom Do Less goal, a custom Odometer goal, etc, etc – so I’d guess they weren’t being considered a “goal type” as such in writing that copy. It’s useful to hear that seemed wrong!

Do Less goals were simply omitted from the list of goals that people with Infinibee get access to by accident – I’ve fixed that now. Thanks for flagging that up as well!

May I propose instead calling it “All standard goal types” or some such – to make it clear that it’s all standard types, but not the custom types?

”unlimited” is a strange word to use when there is a clear limit.

Agreed. I guess we always thought of custom goals as not being a “goal type”. “Custom goals” is listed separately as a perk, which in theory mitigates the confusion, but, yeah, definitely better to just fix the ambiguity. Possibilities:

  1. “Advanced goal types”
  2. “Exotic goal types”
  3. “Premium goal types” (then custom goals are extra-premium, I guess)
  4. “Niche goal types”

(And thanks to @shanaqui for updating the Help article about this in the meantime!)

“Canonical goal types”, perhaps? (Excuse me over here giggling over the idea of custom goals being “Beeminder fanfic”.)

Wait, I think this has to be flipped? Do More and Weight Loss are the canonical Beeminder goals. So the premium perk is the Beeminder fanfic goals.

But also, you’re right that it’s custom goals in particular that are analogous to fanfic. I guess that’s the original confusion, that we have three levels:

  1. Basic free-plan goal types: Do More and Weight Loss
  2. Infinibee premium goal types: Do Less, Odometer, Whittle Down
  3. Bee Plus: custom aka fanfic goals
