fellow self-binders

Correction: this was the first message to akratics anonymous, before
it was a google group.

This list is just a handful of us for now who have made interesting
and/or high-stakes bets with each other on our Beeminder goals.

Let’s kick off the discussion, if you’re willing, with a goal that
you’re really glad to have committed to.

I’ll start:

I have $5k at risk on beeminder.com/d/push (among others) and it’s
wonderful. It’s classic akrasia: a few minutes a day for such a
noticeable fitness gain is a total no-brainer, but without the
commitment device I pretty much never do pushups because I never feel
like doing pushups at any given moment.

My weight loss goals with bets are a night and day difference from
those without. I flatline forever and/or go up a bit and wake up each
day thinking I’ll do it this time and I won’t need to start a bet.
Eventually, I start a bet and all is cured. Now I need to stop being
an akratic about starting a bet in the first place.

In academia, there is sometimes pressure to favor the urgent over the
important. With deadlines ahead, it is easy not to reserve time to
study topics without immediate benefit, e.g. learning new math. A bet
to reserve some time each day for such topics helps me by making the
important urgent.

wow, “make the important urgent” could be a great tagline. mind if we
steal it and add it to padm.us/beeminder-taglines ?
