- i’m grateful that we had my favourite meal for dinner. it was delicious as always

- self-gratitude: i’m grateful that i sent back part of an order just in the nick of time this morning, before the return frame expired.
- i’m grateful the weather wasn’t unbearably hot today.
- The local bakery has “mud scones”. They have the correct scone texture with a pleasing chocolate taste.
- My physio brought her dog to work again today. It’s only the third time I’ve seen him but he greeted me like a long-lost best friend.

- SGQ: I got out of bed earlier than necessary.
- SGQ: I woke up early again! I had time for a run before it got too roasty and a bunch of morning chores, getting ahead on dishes and laundry.
- Our new window unit AC is doing a decent job helping with our struggling central air.
- DnD tonight was very relaxing, just what I was hoping for today.
- I’m really enjoying Tom Ireland’s The Good Virus, a copy of which I picked up this weekend. The kind of book where every couple of pages I yell over to my wife to tell them something cool.
- In last night’s raids on FFXIV, I “parsed” better than 84% of other Paladins who’ve ever submitted their logs for those fights. My new ranking hasn’t locked in yet, but still, I’m pretty sure it’s gone up and I’m pleased with my work there! (Also, thank you to the Dancer who chose me as their Dance Partner to give me the buff. It’s not normal to partner a tank, but it was the correct decision in this case because I was doing amazing!) It’s only normal mode (not Savage), but still, it’s nice to see improvement.
- Tentative plans for my birthday. (Not till August 20th, but it needs planning ahead in this case.)
(Sorry to everyone for whom #2 there was complete gibberish.)
- self-gratitude: i’m grateful i remembered to do another load of laundry today. even if i don’t at all feel like hanging it up to dry right now i’ll still do it, because luckily i’m not quite that acratic. and my flatmate needs the washing machine on the weekend, so there wouldn’t really have been another opportunity for me to use it before our upcoming trip.
- i’m grateful i made good progress at work today.
- my grateful the rest of my photos exported way quicker today than they did last night. don’t know why and in the end it wouldn’t have made a difference because i didn’t even deal with them yet, but it’s still nice when things go smoothly.
- There’s a lovely fresh feel to the air this morning.
- The Password Game, a fun puzzle that I love and hate.
I am determined to get to the end of it! - SQG: I went to bed at the usual time last night, resisting the urge to keep working on the puzzle.
- Got a long-deferred task done.
- Friends to commiserate with when I’m cranky.
- I wrote cotton gloves over very moisturiser-slathered hands last night and it’s helped a bit.
@alys I’m stuck on the chess step!
- SGQ: I’m finally doing some mending I promised a friend… two years ago. I am ashamed it’s taken so long, but proud I’m doing it at all instead of just ignoring it forever.
- Impossible Burgers, for being a delicious effective non-meat burger. Especially grilled—getting a bit of char on it really helps with the texture.
- My soft handkerchief.
so fun!
long ramble about my journey with this game so far
first update, written in the morning: luckily i don’t play wordle anymore, so i only got to rule 11 so far, and will have to try and crack it another time. are you sure there is an ending, though?
how far did you get yet?
afternoon update: i got to rule 16—i don’t really play chess, and the only move i wanted to make is apparently “illegal,” but maybe i can figure this out together with my flatmate tonight. :) (of course i could just go through all the options one by one, but where’s the fun in that, when you’re not really figuring out the solution yourself?)
evening/night update: so my flatmate failed with the chess as well and i ended up going through all the options but that didn’t yield any results until i read the wikipedia page again and if you do a check (that’s proper chess lingo, right?
) you have to add a “+” to the end of the annotation, so that worked! however, rule 24 completely and utterly broke me!! HUGE SPOILER INCOMING FOR RULE 24!!! paul has starved while i went looking for a youtube video that’s exactly 18 minutes and 12 seconds long! wtf! i’m so devastated! i guess i should have put a lot of trees there?? i vaguely remember them saying paul eats a tree a minute BUT THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!! (no but i do love it it’s an excellent game!! :D
shanaqui
me
(when you get past it, it doesn’t get better XD i am really excited! this seems like an easy enough game that you could beat in like a minute, then a few minutes, then it gets more and more absurd and intricate and i am absolutely in love with it :D)
- i’m grateful that the support hotline i called today to change my mother’s internet contract was super amazing. very smooth solution, very friendly, couldn’t have asked for anything to go better!
- self-gratitude: i’m grateful i remembered to call said support hotline today.
- i’m grateful i got to leave work early-ish today, after a not-all-too-stressful set of tasks.
- i’m grateful @alys linked the password game => the https://neal.fun site. such amazing and wonderful and fun and absurd and mind-blowing and wild and interesting and devastating and incredible gems to find there!!
:D(yes i did click and look through almost every single one of them;) - i’m grateful that distractions work. distractions are good when the thing you want to be distracted from is a never-ending well of strong emotions
:)
- Appreciation from a client.
- A fun conversation with workmates about a difficult job.
- In a TV show I watched last night, a character casually mentioned DuckDuckGo in conversation, instead of Google.
@shanaqui I was stuck on the chess step for ages! It was a combination of me not being well practiced at chess and me not realising I needed to add + at the end for a checkmate move and x in the middle for a capturing move.
@rperce Starting tasks that have been put off for ages is the HARDEST thing. Well done!
(actually + is for a check; # or sometimes ++ is for mate)
Thank you!!
- The new turf is all down, after … far too long!
- Some rain means I don’t need to water it quite so intensively
- Found GPT4All, an off-line, completely open-source, llama-based, chatbot which is privacy-aware (so - by default - doesn’t leak anything outside of your machine). Started some experiments - much to learn here!
- It’s the “Make It Rain” campaign in FFXIV, meaning bonus points in certain mini-games. A niche gratitude, for sure, but still.
- The weather should be nice but not too warm for my outing tomorrow.
- Realising I can take it a bit easier today.
- A magpie took food from my hand yesterday. It’s been reluctant to again but is clearly considering the concept each time. It is however smart enough to know I will eventually give up and just toss the food at it.

- @enbee for prompting me to look at the other things at https://neal.fun/ .
- The deep sea is astonishing. There’s life so far down!
Ha, of course! I thought “checkmate” wasn’t quite the right term but couldn’t think of a better one - what with “check” being so very different from “checkmate”. ![]()
- i’m grateful for a chill night with friends. we cooked together and watched a movie, it was all very cozy.
- i’m grateful that it’s cooled down a bit again at night, finally.
- i’m super grateful that i have my headphones again and can use them again, because:
- self-gratitude: i’m grateful that i managed to complete my phone transfer last night! it went way more smoothly (and took way longer
) than i would have anticipated. didn’t go perfectly though, i don’t think i’ll get my text messages to sync anymore (which is fine), and also for whatever inexplicable reason there seems to be no system’s dark mode on my “new” phone (which is much more horrible!) [it’s actually the same make and model as my old phone, but there’s probably a newer android and/or emui version installed. the ui looks slightly different at times. and the no-darkmode-thing really sucks; luckily i can enable it seperately for a lot of apps!].
- self-gratitude: i’m grateful that i took some time for myself this morning, after doing early (comparatively, relatively) morning errands. just laying down in bed again, listening to some music, doing some colouring. working headphones are truly the greatest thing. <3
- i’m grateful for the extremely chill time i spent with my mother today!
- i’m grateful that i have so much to look forward to tomorrow!
- another self-gratitude: i’m grateful i went home partly by foot again.
- and another one: i’m grateful i’ve got all my online responsibilities pre-trip pretty much dealth with already, or at least prepared in such a way that i can also do them from abroad.
- I’ve been given some chocolates.
- Delicious left-over curry for dinner last night.
- SGQ: I’m getting better at keeping good posture when I am sitting.
- Got to meet some of the other Beeminder hive in person - a real pleasure!
- Undisrupted train journeys
- Our poorly cat was vastly improved by an evening visit to the vet
- Had a good time in London meeting other Beeminder people.
- Got myself books, because of course. (No more new books for months except whatever people get me for my birthday and stuff I get sent to review, methinks…!)
- Lisa used some canned air to sort out a dust situation in my computer fans, while I was out.
- i’m grateful that the dream i had tonight was not a nightmare, despite being full nightmare material. i wasn’t scared during and after it, which i’m grateful for and even more intensely fascinated by.
- self-gratitude: i’m grateful that i remembered this dream so well after waking up and wrote it down in great detail before i could forget it.
- for probably temporary reasons, but still, to blatantly quote @alys, i’ve also recently gotten better at keeping good posture.
- i’m super grateful that our one-shot today will turn into a full campaign! (well, not the story, but the same group of people, and one character might even be the same, and i’ll probably get to play a plasmoid, and the vibes today were impeccable, so it’s just gonna be great!!)
