Did you consider different styles before settling on Spencerian?
Not really! I am easily manipulated by Rajiv Surendra, so I didn’t look far.
This isn’t my first rodeo, though: I used to have an interest in medieval scripts and got reasonably good (like twenty years ago) at making small documents that looked like they could have come from 12th century Latin manuscripts.
But this time around I was motivated to find something 1) practical and 2) beautiful and Spencerian is one of the few kids on the block in that territory. Plus it has lots of fans, so there’s good learning materials.

My weight nearly smacked the acceptable upper limit on here and it triggered the motivation I was looking for to reboot my weight loss quest from last year. It started nosediving again once I applied the working formula: fast till lunchtime, run fasted, make your first meal carrots + hummus, and then gently/lightly/imprecisely track dinner calories. Leave room for some wine or beer.
Weight started plummeting again and I’m back on the path to my target of…ripped and tan 2026.

Long time no see! Retiring some goals!
- Pushups: This one is a little surprising because it’s been so effective, but it gradually lost its clean effectiveness once the volume of pushups started causing RSI issues. I’ve held on for a long time with “pushup equivalents” but it’s just not effective recordkeeping. Not sure if I want another goal? My year of pushups got me a little ripped and I feel motivated enough not to lose that. Might keep it simple and just let momentum carry me.
- page a day of poetry: Just started dreading it and squeezing it in. Page a day of philosophy has been surprisingly consistently excellent even when I just squeeze it in, which is the opposite of the outcome I expected compared to poetry.
Otherwise things are going awesome. Weight continuing to gradually trend down since my scare last time I posted here.
Experimenting again with trying to drink less – I’ve been a consistent two-beers-a-day drinker for a while now, and it’s been hard to shake. Currently feeling motivated and applying some tools to bust through the habit. Mostly just getting into activities that require evening sobriety and making sure I have some kind of special post-work transition beverage like a big ol’ cup of peppermint tea. So far so good but it’s really early. Just a few days. Noticing my running improve and my weight go down sharper is a nice motivator, too.

Oops I missed a day of reading philosophy.
Otherwise, everything going well. Having fewer goals feels great. Enjoying this moment of less obligation.
Alcohol reduction has been going well, too. Peppermint tea really does seem to be the thing. I keep fantasizing about more interesting/slower-to-drink/probably-expensive alcohol alternatives but so far so good. Probably drinking about 1/2 to 1/3 the amount I was a couple weeks ago, mostly when offered and on Shabbat.
