This idea is totally going to go mainstream!

“The person who’s going to reap the most benefit from the GymPact reward
system is arguably the person who needs it least—members of that iron
willed tribe who’ve been managing to get themselves to the gym regularly
without an iPhone app for years, and now will be able to nab suckers’ money
for their trouble.”

I disagree with this - the person who already goes to the gym regularly
doesn’t need GymPact at all! How will they benefit?

This company wants to charge you for not exercising.

Gym-pact’s business model is one we thought we’d try for Beeminder at
one point: You’re literally betting on your own success and the people
who lose fund the people who win.

Definite moral hazard there as you attract not only gym rats but
people who might be inclined to hack their iphones so it reports that
they’re living at the gym.

We don’t have that problem with Beeminder since your only reward is
being awesome and reaching the end of your yellow brick road.
(And getting our pretty graphs and bot reminders and whatnot for free
– I guess that’s something!)

But that means it has zero appeal to cheaters and weaselers, which is
why we’re able to be generous about exemption criteria and whatnot
(see recent thread about Michael Merchant!) without it inviting abuse.

By the way: there’s no need to hack your iphone to cheat.
You can add a new gym to the database, just add your work address as a new
gym and you’re an eight-hour-a-day fitness maniac.
