instapaper count - perhaps like gmailzero?

So I’ve managed to get my instapaper from 215 unread articles down to 15https://www.beeminder.com/aamaras/goals/instapaperover four months, which I’m pretty pleased with, particularly since those
totals include the inflows of new articles every day. There’s a hard core
of about ten verrry long articles that I still need to crush, but still a
solid effort. I’ve been manually updating the count, and while I’ve been
adding new articles over the period I reckon I have added less than usual,
knowing how many were already in the backlog.

Now the backlog is (mostly) clear, I’d like to keep it down, a la
gmailzero. A couple questions in case anyone has thought about this:

  1. Is anyone doing this already? Or does anyone have any tips to automate
it? I’m sure the Instapaper and Beeminder APIs could be happily married but
it would take me a while experimenting to get it working.
  2. How to deal with new articles? I figure I am going to be adding more
articles now, and ideally I’d like to avoid derailing because I found an
usually large number of interesting articles on a particular day. Does
the weightloss/adaptive-road concept help here? Should I just track
’articles read’ and manually adjust the road to from time to time to match
    my rate of adding articles?

I admire your graph! But what do actually want to do?

For example, if your long-term goal is: “I spend 2 hours a day reading.”
then track that.
On the other hand, if your long-term goal is: “I don’t let my to-read pile
grow without bound.” then track that.
Another possibility is: “I keep up to date with the latest developments in
my field.” which might mean tracking some sort of “how far behind
up-to-date am I?” number.

This is a good point, and I think part of my problem - up til now my goal
was ‘destroy the pile!’. Now I need to figure out whether it should be
‘keep the pile low’ or ‘read twenty articles a week’ or what.

By posting I’ve motivated myself to try harder to solve the problem:

  • I created two IFTTT recipes (https://ifttt.com/recipes/85393, and another
which IFTTT won’t let me share…)
    • one to check the RSS feed of my Instapaper ‘read later’ folder; then
send an email to the beeminder bot with ‘^ 1’
    • and one to check the RSS feed of my Instapaper ‘archive’ folder; then
send an email to the beeminder bot with ‘^ -1’
  • The goal IFTTT emails to is set up as a Custom goal, with good side:
below; direction of road: up; kyoom: yes; and aggday: sum.

So - every time I instapaper a new article I get +1; every time I archive
an article I get -1.

Let’s see how this goes

PS is there a post somewhere detailing the settings of the various goal
types? I have this one set up as custom but I’m sure it doesn’t have to be.
It’s just a downwards-sloping/flat line; good side below; with values
posted as -1/+1 and summed to the running total as we go.

Aaron, holy cow, this is huge! (And sorry for my slowness in realizing
it!) We’ve been bugging IFTTT for I think over a year to be a “channel
partner” as they call it since that would open up a whole new world of
things to beemind. It never occurred to us that we could just have an
IFTTT recipe to email the beeminder bot and voila!

I think we need to blog about this. Would you like to do a guest post?

And I encourage others to try variants of Aaron’s IFTTT recipe!

PS: the answer to your question is buried in the API docs –
Beeminder API Reference and grep for “goal types” – but you do need a
custom goal for the combination you described. actually, the version
in your PS has to be custom but maybe there’s a typo there. the
version you describe above that is just a Set-A-Limit goal.

PPS: in related news, we just today made custom goals a premium
feature, in part because newbees are totally buffaloed by custom
goals. quite understandably. if any akratics anonymous folks want
custom goals, talk to us. we’re still experimenting with subscriptions
and premium features. this is literally brand new, like just today.

 Most of them probably don’t need to be custom, right? In any case,
people who’ve been beeminding for over a year and giving us awesome
feedback are going to get special treatment, no question.

In other news, I’m about to tweet this as a UVI – twitter.com/beemuvi

the datapoints. Eager to see what people come up with. And thanks
again to Aaron Maras! I’ll tweet this from our main twitter account –

PS: It’s alive! I just set up a recipe based on Aaron’s that watches
@beemuvi and posts a +1 to uvitest – meta – beeminder and it totally
worked!
I need to convert the real graph – uvi – meta – beeminder – to a Do

each time) to have IFTTT auto-update that one.

awesome! you should add the comments back again, now that those work.

and now i want to see someone beemind something like how often they
leave the house, using one of these: WeMo Motion Integrations - Connect Your Apps with IFTTT
or maybe point one of those at your treadmill and beemind how often
you use it. or at your refrigerator. so many possibilities! i should
probably get a WeMo and start experimenting myself…
definitely let me know what things people come up with. if you try
something i’ll add it to the list at Beeminding Outside the Box | Beeminder Blog (i’m
adding aaron’s instabee goal there now).

Daniel, I have a question:

@beemuvi and posts a +1 to beeminder.cotwitterm/meta/uvitesthttp://beeminder.com/meta/uvitestand it totally
worked!

How do you watch the @beemuvi twitter timeline? The twitter channel on
ifttt does not have any trigger, and the rss of the old twitter apihttps://dev.twitter.com/discussions/4823will soon be
droppedhttps://dev.twitter.com/docs/api/1.1/overview#New_Twitter_client_policies
.
I’m asking because I recently set up an odometer goal based on the tweets
published in a given account.

Thanks in advance!
Alessandro

Yeah, I didn’t realize Twitter was dropping RSS when I set that up.
That’s super sucky. I’m thinking we should just add explicit Twitter
integration to Beeminder soon – maybe our deadline should be when RSS
stops working on Twitter. The more of you who chime in that you want
that the higher we’ll prioritize it! Actually, let’s formalize that:

Zapier has several Twitter triggers.

Noah (and anyone else for whom it may be handy),
You can now use the caret syntax when creating datapoints via the api.

(It came up for Noah when he was setting up some trigger where he
didn’t have current timestamp as an available field. Now I’m curious,
what was that, Noah?)

As it happens, it was exactly this use case.

I set up a Zapier action that monitored a Twitter account, and for every
new tweet posted, call a webhook, which is basically a POST to the API.
Unfortunately, however, the only datetime I had access to was the created
date of the Tweet, which is not a timestamp. And Zapier does not allow me
to parse/format the data. I can only pass it through. My work around was to
make use of your email integration, and have it send an email from my Gmail
account. Doing so allowed me to use the caret syntax.

I tried to unsubscribe from akratics annon. but it relayed that I was not a member. I get piles of emails… Please stop sending them to me! I have enough things piling up that I’m not getting done without more unread emails adding to my list.
