Starting a whittle down road should also ask me for a goal date and value, right?
Just created one and ended up with a 0 rate. Newbies would probably be confused.

I don’t think any goals ask for that and I thiiiiiink this is by design. In that Beeminder goals are thought to be more like “things I want to do forever / for a long time”. And I guess the goal creation code is too generic to respect that whittle down goals make a lot more sense with a target value and date. So yes, I think it totally should.
Also I think they are still to this day internally called inbox-zero goals which would imply that the target value would always be 0. Which is of course not true. So much confusion in one place! Names are important!
