Oh man, I have such unreasonably strong feelings about underscores. I’m not quite willing to take people’s beloved underscored names away, despite their aesthetic wrongness, but I’m also not willing to explicitly endorse them. So, unpopular an opinion as it may be, I’m closing this one as wontfix (or NIX as we call it internally). Also, note that the error message doesn’t say a-z, 0-9, and dashes exclusively. 
Feel free to argue but I might decide to kill underscores altogether if you do!
(I should also emphasize that we’re normally highly grateful for easy UVI ideas and you had no way to know what a weirdo I am about underscores so this was an eminently reasonable bug report ex ante! In fact, it’s good for another round of stickers; just DM me your address if you’d like them!)
