Gratitude journaling together

  1. Watching a flying fox eat palm tree fruits overhead. I don’t often see them close up.
  2. All three lizards in my garden again today, staring at me in a threatening manner when I wanted to turn off the hose water they were enjoying. (I left it on for a bit; they like it so much.)
  3. I made porridge with significantly more care than usual and it’s soft, creamy, and not burnt at all. There’s a large pot of it that will last for several days.

  1. Wales unexpectedly beat Ireland in our first game of the Six Nations!
  2. As a consequence we indulged in milkshakes.
  3. I treated a repetitive strain injury promptly yesterday and was rewarded by it being pretty much fine today.

  1. Another tree that I thought was dead has leaves. Not many, but enough to be hopeful.
  2. Jeremy made mince on toast with a bolognaise sauce.
  3. This make-your-own-Bayeux Tapestry app and examples.
  1. I learned something new and useful at work.
  1. Got myself working yesterday and today when I really didn’t want to by sitting in the same room as my wife and working together.
  2. It didn’t snow too much overnight, so I should finally get my co-wash order today.
  3. A lot of my goal archives will kick in today, so I will have a leaner Beeminder setup, which I’m glad for right now.

  1. I saw an owl on a low branch on a tree on my walk last night.
  2. The stars were clear during my walk.
  3. I had a helpful discussion with a coworker about us making a mutual motivation pact at work for focussing on necessary tasks that we don’t want to do.

  1. I saw a pair of Bush Stone-curlews in the park with two tiny chicks sheltering at the feet of one.
  2. I had to go into the office today and so I had lunch at my favourite cafe.
  3. I did several focussed work sessions with a coworker and we were both noticable more productive than usual.

  1. I’m rather enjoying A Cheesemonger’s History of the British Isles. It’s really fascinating to understand how cheese is made, and while the history parts are largely full of speculation and comparisons to modern cheeses, it’s still interesting to see how someone reconstructs the past (and it’s always clear when he’s guessing).
  2. Surprise book from a friend! Actually for my birthday, originally, but life happened. I’d forgotten I even wanted this book, but it’s one I’ve had on my wishlist for aaages, it turns out.
  3. Chatting with people about an article about translation/localisation in Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VIII is fun. I’ve always loved that game, and I love stuff that picks into words and translation. (I’ve done some translation myself and it’s always about interpretation as well, and it’s interesting to see how someone can do equally valid translations which are nonetheless different in flavour.)
  1. I bought a rice cooker and Jeremy made fried rice.

  1. A pair of blue-faced honeyeaters in the garden.
  2. Lunch at a cafe: haloumi, eggs, mushrooms.
  3. We have a perfectly formed round spider web with a tiny pretty spider in the middle! (The face that it’s inside the house under one of the tables is merely a minor detail.)
  1. One of my Beeminder goals is slowly making some differences around the house.
  2. Lucky timing on something so no mess was made.
  3. A rugby friendly made a great diversion in the middle of my workday yesterday, even if I had to watch with the commentary in Welsh (which I don’t understand).
  4. Today there is a national game, Scotland v Wales. A month ago I would have said we’re sure to lose, and it will be tough, but I’m not totally pessimistic after our performance last week.
  1. Pretty architecture in some of the houses in the posher parts of my suburb.
  1. Wales beat Scotland! With a very prettily done try by Louis Rees-Zammit, wunderkind of Welsh rugby. I was sceptical about him, but I have to admit he’s pretty great.
  2. Lisa actually put money on the game, so they bought me dessert with the winnings. I got cookie dough, but there’s also a cheesecake for tonight!
  3. I cleared the inbox in an hour even though it looked really full. Lucky set of circumstances, of course – couldn’t have cleared it that fast normally. But I’m relieved we won’t have a deficit all day.
  4. The usual Valentine’s Day covenant has been renewed, i.e. Lisa will buy me one book of my choice each month for the next year, and I will not pout or complain about two naps per month for the next year.

  1. One last morning of hiding in bed before I go back to studying.
  2. The foot peel I did has really helped with some of my callouses on my feet, more than I expected. (Thank you to Cantras from Habitica for mentioning these so I knew about it in the first place!)
  3. I should be able to get my treadmill sorted out soon. No replacement until March, though. Still, getting it sorted out would be great.
  1. Smoked cheeses.
  1. A compliment from my manager about some work I’d done well.
  1. I eked my way through the unit on comparing means finally. Paired data is way easier to handle than unpaired, which I was not expecting, so today’s work went quickly.
  2. Most of my inboxes were quiet so far today. (Aside from Beeminder’s, but I forgive you all.)
  3. Today is shopping day and therefore there might be treats. Last week Lisa bought me blueberry muffins. Maybe more muffins???

  1. Jeremy made chocolate shortbread biscuits which are awesome.
  2. I spent time after work with some workmates, eating, drinking, and chatting about work. Good bonding time. I have great workmates.
  3. A bus driver was sweet enough to pick me up at a stop in town that he wasn’t supposed to stop at.
  4. I missed my stop at the home end of the ride but the next one wasn’t far off.
  1. Chatting with @alys and other Habitica friends about meeting up again someday.
  2. My GP appointment was a very slick process even though it would’ve normally needed a physical exam. Suspicious mole has been passed as probably OK, some monitoring will be done, but I’m not to worry about it.
  3. Some generous wonderful friends are going to help me sort out a course I want to do, if I get in. I managed to apply today because my university finally got back to me with the proof of enrolment.

  1. I got ridiculously lucky in having friends like @alys who view my weird spreadsheet problem as a Fun and Interesting Puzzle.
  2. I finished another unit of my stats course and understood everything! At least to the degree that I can follow the conclusions and replicate it if I follow the book… which since the exam will be open book, that’s enough. (I won’t stick at “being able to do it if I follow the book”, but it’s nice to know that I have that to fall back on.)
  3. It’s the 8th anniversary of me cutting off my long hair, and I have no regrets, but I’m glad I took photos and kept my ponytail, too. I did love my long hair. (I only know it’s the 8th anniversary because Facebook told me, I don’t keep obsessive track or something. Just funny to think about.)
