When do whittle-down goals restart after derailing, and when do they archive themselves?

I have derailed on several whittle-down goals, with inconsistent outcomes. Sometimes, after I derail, the goal will automatically restart, but other times, it will archive itself, and I’ll have to restart it.

Also, when I try to restart it when that happens, I get an error like “Error restarting road!”

Just to add this problem just came up again with my email-w goal. It derailed, and then it archived itself!
