August 2026 Android Beta

Hi folks!

We’ve been working on a pretty extensive revamp of the internals of the Android app. We have a beta running, and I’d love to get your feedback… quickly! We’ve gotta get this out by the end of the month due to an Android deadline, and that’s not a lot of days for feedback. We have done months and months of internal testing, but I’d love to see how things go across a larger set of testers.

There are a lot of improvements around syncing, uploading data, widgets, notifications, and helping troubleshooting and diagnostics.

There are a lot of internal updates to lay groundwork for future improvements–and there are more improvements I want to make in this series shortly, but we have to hit this Android deadline.

If you’d like to join, try going to https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.beeminder.beeminder on your device or https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.beeminder.beeminder on a computer. It should let you join the beta and it should download to your device within a few minutes.

Thanks, folks!

It’s working perfectly for me! Submitting datapoints is plausibly faster but I’ve already forgotten what it was like before so I’m not confident I could even tell which version I was on in a blind test.

Amazing work dealing with Android’s infuriating internals, Adam!

I’m waiting for the new version to download but in the meantime I wonder if health connect support is coming?

I’m already on the beta program, and wasn’t aware there was a new beta happening, but I have not noticed any difference in the app recently. (This might be a good thing.)

@melink14 Health Connect support won’t be in this August build.

I dug into connecting to it a few generations back (I forget what it was called before Google Fit), and I could tell we would have a hard time explaining what we were doing and making it through their review process. I just glanced at it, and it looks completely different now, so maybe that’s different too!

I think the best way to request it is to email support with the request, and then it gets into the funnel where it gets properly prioritized. Folks who know, please correct me if I’m wrong!

Email support directly or from inside the app?

I can guess there’s some complexity but it’s definitely a big gap between iOS and Android. (I guess Apple has laxer review requirements)

At the time, integrating with Google Fit required a third party security audit that would typically cost “between $15000 and $75000”.

Technically I’m still on holiday, but since I’m online anyway… Either would reach support, but emailing from within the app would send an email to Adam as well, and that route is mostly meant for Android bugs that need his attention. That’s not needed in the case of a suggestion; only I handle tallying up feedback, so it only needs to make it to support@beeminder.com.

That said, like Adam said, last we checked implementing it would require that security audit and, IIRC, that would need to be repeated yearly… And there really, really hasn’t been enough interest to justify that – under 10 votes.
